A Foreign Home Jerry - Feb 23, 2021

A place so foreign, yet maybe one day we can call it our home.

The view in the picture would have left me to envision an arid wasteland no different from our earth, with rocks, sand, and other particulates roaming endlessly until it met its thriving and flourishing counterparts.

Needless to say the more I concentrated on granularities of each rock, gradients of the surface contours, and the spectral properties of the sky above, I would really think this was just our (ordinary) planet.  But it isn't.  Quite honestly, I'd be flabbergasted if someone told me this view could only be seen 200 million kilometers away from us with terrain impeccably similar, yet simultaneously different in many other ways.

Never would I had thought a picture as "plain" as this would be insurmountably fulfilling, to perceive luminescence not of our planet, to be vivified with tactile stimuli for what we may have already been accustomed with, to listen to such adventitious sounds of what this planetary symphony will play, and to close your eyes at this moment with all your thoughts and senses formulated into one final motion - to be astonished with arms held high, standing there on that red planet.
