Two Suns   Jerry - Mar 29, 2013

Have you ever spent a moment of your life to look at, think about, or just imagine what the sun is?

I know the answers may vary depending who you’re asking too – answers that range from something as simple as “a yellow circle” to more complex, academic responses like “a sphere of high temperature gas that radiates heat and electromagnetic radiation, etc.”  But what else could the three-letter word symbolize?  Here’s a brief story that describes it in a way that compels you to give an extra 5 seconds of thought whenever that word comes by your way.

There was once was a baby, cradled comfortably on top his mother’s arms.  Endlessly crying, the baby boy had no capacity of understanding the destructive and war-torn battlefield that laid wasted outside his small, encumbered dwelling.  An appearance of a monstrosity ensued just before its eyes found its target: the newly born baby.  Expeditious but highly meticulous, a sharp lance-like weapon lunged toward the baby.  Acting autonomously in an attempt to save their son, both the father and mother leaped into the trail of onslaught and sacrificed themselves, preventing the weapon from reaching the baby boy.  Time stopped for the parents, smiling with their last gratitude.  Struggling for a few more moments of life, they spoke to the baby, who was calm as a feather still, about all they can, expressing their lifelong lessons, aspirations, and of course love to the motionless baby.  Finally, they left along with the monstrosity which had fallen shortly after.

Many years later, the baby, now a grown adolescent, lives his life estranged with no family and with only friends to be accompanied by.  Through his entire developing life, he has not received this paternal and maternal love that his other friends had.  Without nurture and proper discipline, he lives his life carefree, mischievous, and carrying an utterly super-egotistical behaviour everywhere he goes.  He envied others for what he couldn’t receive and blamed his parents for not being with him when he needed.  His faults are plentiful, but in the end, he continued to show one good characteristic that has caused people to change their views about him, from hatred to compassion – his undying fire of belief and confidence to help and save the ones around him.  Unknowingly, this grandeur of traits he possessed originated from a simple message from his dying parents’ last breath.  A large period of time went by and he gradually changed the hearts of many and had won the trust and friendship of others.

One day, his past caught up to his present.  The story of who his parents were and what they did for him was revealed.  Tears of alienation became tears of humility.  His dark past had been truly conquered by the triumphant unveiling of the truth.  By the end of all this, his determination grew even stronger and his will to reach for what he believes in has not only expanded, but has been reinforced with a coat of support and adulation.

Like the title of this post, the suns refer to his parents – our parents.  They are ones who gave us life, just like how a sun gives energy and growth to the plants.  They shine rays of praise and comfort to us when we feel abandoned or let down, just like how a sun curtails our time in darkness into a time of light and uplifting happiness.  And most importantly, a sun will stay by us, from the day you were born until the end of your life, always bringing the same unchanging warmth that we so need.  Likewise, our parents are always by our side, be it physically beside us, mentally within our memories, or affectionately within our hearts.  They will continue to bring forth their gentle warmth and love to us wherever we are and will always be a driving force to who we are as a person.  Let them be examples of encouragement, burning with the same passion we have – just like our own sun that burns mightily in ourselves.
